Dam Down

Between 1943 and 1963 was carried out the construction of the dam of the Cenajo.
The 6 of June of 1963 was inaugurated by the dictator Francisco Franco. For this inauguration, and to give it more visibility, 100 cubic hectometres were derived from the Fuensanta reservoir, upstream, so that it would show full.
The number of prisoners who worked on the dam throughout the work is unknown, but in 1953 there were 123, representing 17% of all prisoners redeeming punishment that year. The total number of workers involved was 7700, according to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation. Of all the deaths that occurred during the work, in 1954 a national newspaper announced the death of three workers, who fell from 76 meters in height, and in whose honor a cross was erected.
In 1963, it was the highest dam in Spain.
It is located in the municipallity of Moratalla, Region of Murcia.

Drought at Region of Murcia

Other times I have commented that in the Region of Murcia it usually rains little. But this year is being really hard.
In the image, Cenajo swamp, the most important swamp of the Segura river. It is located at the head of the river. Currently, today, it is at 17% of its capacity (a year ago, by the same date, it was at 34%). I took the photo last August 1st 2017. Terrible.

This drought is hard in the bordering provinces as well.

Portman Lighthouse

In 1860 is given the order of the construction of a lighthouse of type 5º in Portman. Because in this location was planned in turn to build coastal defenses. In July of 1862 a commission was created to study the design of both constructions in a coordinated way. The lighthouse is built on the ruins of the Tower of San Gil (defense tower, 1596), reusing some of the materials of the same. It finally comes into operation on January 31, 1865, exactly the same day it does The lighthouse of Cabo de Palos.

Mining Hills

The mining mountains of La Union contain important metallic mineral deposits, mainly of lead and zinc, and was characterized by an intense mining activity already in times of Carthaginians and Romans. The mining boom of the 19th century filled these mountains with underground mining, and from 1950 onwards, open pit mining had a brutal impact on the landscape, until the mining shut down in 1991.

Graffiti Mix

This is my last post about this awesome exhibition.

Left wall.
- Top left: "Vida" ("Life") by SFHIR (Spain). His beginnings in graffiti go back to 1995 when, at the age of fourteen, he discovered in this art the ideal expression vehicle to channel his concerns. In his works he combines graffiti with various tools such as airbrushes, pistols, brushes or rollers. His work is marked by an artistic obsession, hyperrealism.

- Bottom left: "Angela" by Noe Two (France). It is one of the most emblematic figures of French graffiti. His art is shown in murals and on canvas; This self-taught artist does not hesitate to explore the different facets of graphic creation. His travels around the world and new cultures are transformed and nourished by his painting. Beyond borders, his work conveys universal emotions common to all. The painter offers us portraits of women and animals in which the colour overflows us, the looks and their intensity show an expressive and modern painting with a mixture of realism, colour and pure graffiti.

- Bottom right: "Retrato" ("Portrait") by Carlos Callizo (Spain). Doctor "Cum Laude" in Fine Arts by the University of Murcia. He has dedicated himself exclusively to painting and in recent years has experimented with murals and Urban Art, getting to participate in the Urban Art Festival "Le M.U.R" in Paris. At present he combines this activity with Professor of painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Public University of Murcia.

Right wall.
- Left: "Astronaute" by Levalet (France). Charles Leval or Levalet is one of those artists who not only creates an incredible street art, but develops it in a personal style. It was initially formed in Strasbourg, studying painting and then animation. His pieces interact with his surroundings, hide, scale and often include three-dimensional objects transformed into urban facilities. His work needs a careful localization of perfect spaces and accurate measurements, as well as inspiration when drawing.

- Right: Statue of Liberty by Blek le Rat. Here in a previous post.

Bloody Chilhood

Another look at this exhibition.

- Left: "Pippi" by Goyo 203 (Region of Murcia, Spain). José Luis, better known as Goyo 203, began to paint in a self-taught way and almost without pretending it has become his way of life. Colourful murals and brimming with force that trap the viewer from the first moment. Thanks to his work, his many concerns and his adventurous spirit and survivor he has become the successful artist he is today.

On the right:
- Top left: "Anhelos2" (Longings2) by Kraser (Region of Murcia, Spain). José Jorge Nicolás Salas, aka Kraser, has been painting for more than twenty years. "When I was 12 years old, graffiti started to attract attention when I saw them painted on the streets of their city." It receives influences of Picasso, Kandinsky, the surrealists, Mersad Berber and Keith Haring, among others. Although in his work he tries to tell stories, sometimes he becomes visceral and direct. He has exhibited his work around the world and currently lives in Milan.
- Bottom left: "S.W.A.T" by Ludo (France). Ludo's work, often called "The Revenge of Nature," connects the world of plants and animals with our technological universe. Drawing with the precision of the botanical illustrations, Ludo proposes to us elegant and ferocious hybrid organisms. Bees hovering behind gas masks and spectacles, automatic weapons crowning the head of sunflowers, etc. The work of ludo is present in both Europe, as in America and Asia.
- Top and bottom right, here, in a previous post.

4 Graffiti Frames

From art exhibition: "Urban art: From the street to the museum"

- Top left: "Photograph in Shangai" by Jana&JS (Austria/France). JANA and JS are a couple of artists working together since 2006. Austrian and French, who now live in Salzburg (Austria) after spending a few years in Madrid and Paris, their main theme is the urban look. They work with stencils (templates) that they cut by hand according to their own photos. Nowadays they work both in urban spaces and in closed exhibition spaces.
- Top right: "Skull key" by OSCH (Chile). Otto Schade's painting ranges from abstract and surrealism to urban art. Working primarily with oil painting and traditional media such as canvas, he also practices other techniques such as collage, illustration and template. His art has taken him to Berlin, Moscow, New York, Amsterdam and finally to London, where he currently lives and works.
- Bottom left: "Jessica" by David Walker (UK). This artist has created an inimitable style of female portraits. His technique is based on explosive mixtures of colors in which he only uses the aerosol. The fame of David Walker has led him to exhibit his works in Berlin, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Lisbon, London, New York and Paris, among other places, along with those of other great urban artists and representatives of the street movement.
- Bottom right: "No digas a los niños lo rápido que pasa el tiempo" (Don't tell kids how fast time passes) by Jef Aerosol (France). Jean-François Perroy, better known as Jef Aerosol, is a French artist who works in templates. He made his first stencil in Tours in 1982. He remains one of the pioneers and leaders in this ephemeral art. Much of his work is dedicated to street musicians, beggars, children, etc. Paint the life-size silhouettes. White, black and gray are his chosen colours and we will always see his famous and mysterious red arrow. Many cities around the world have been blessed with his pieces and countless portraits of famous people immortalized by the artist.

Smiley Icon

Another one graffiti picture from this lovely exhibition.

On the left: "Fun" by Speedy Graphito (France). Speedy Graphito is the pseudonym of Olivier Rizzo. He graduated with honors at the Estienne School of Art in Paris in 1983. The following year he began to sign his works as Speedy Graphito. His reputation has been growing steadily since the early 1980s. His art is inspired by the iconography of animated characters from film and television. Speedy Graphito has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world.
