Today is the Spain's National Day, which commemorates, among other things, the discovery of America by Christopher
Columbus in 1492. It's a bank holiday.
But today I want to comment on the
Spanish flag. It emerged that the origin of a contest organized by the Spanish King Carlos III in 1785. That king wanted a flag that could see perfectly in naval battles. 12 flags were presented, and ultimately won our actual flag (although with another shield).
