The White Cat: A Beautiful Coat but ...

 Seeing this beautiful white cat basking in the sun with its eyes half-closed is the very picture of tranquility. However, felines with white or predominantly light fur possess biological characteristics that make them unique in the animal kingdom.

There is a close genetic link between white fur, blue eyes, and hereditary deafness. This is due to the dominant W (White) gene, which sometimes affects the development of cells in the inner ear. Interestingly, if a white cat has only one blue eye, it is very likely to be deaf only in that ear.

Although they love to bask in the sun, they lack protective melanin in their skin. Their ears, nose, and eyelids are very vulnerable areas, making them prone to sunburn or developing dermatitis if they spend too many hours directly exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Like their skin, their light eyes are often much more sensitive to bright sunlight. That's why it's common to see them in this feline posture: sitting like statues, absorbing the heat but with their eyes tightly closed to protect their pupils.
