Hospital Bridge
The Hospital Bridge is a bridge in the city of Murcia was built in 1973, although its current design is attributed to the engineer Santiago Calatrava, who renovated it in 1999.
It connects the Murcian neighborhood of Polígono Infante Juan Manuel with the city center across the urban section of the Segura River. It takes its name from its location next to the former General Hospital* of Murcia, now called Reina Sofía Hospital (Queen Sofia Public Hospital building at background).
It is a rather inconvenient bridge for pedestrians, since, to cross the river, you can only cross via the central footbridge, so you have to cross it twice to get to the other side.
*General Hospital is the oldest one in Murcia. Currently takes 500 years. An study establishes the year 1525 as the origin of the hospital center, when the Council, the Bishopric and the Chapter reached an agreement to build a General Hospital in the area of extramural expansion of the so-called Old Alcázar, next to the Church of Our Lady of Grace and up to the Tower of Caramajul.
Current building turns 20 years.
