In Spain, the native squirrel species is the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). It is found in coniferous and mixed forests and is expanding across much of the peninsula, although its habitat is discontinuous.
It is the only squirrel species native to Spain. An expansion of the species has been observed in recent years, even in urban areas.
Sierra Espuña is home to an endemic subspecies called Sciurus vulgaris hoffmani, which is reddish-gray in color and iit was discovered in 1967.
