Fire, History and a Sardine: The Return to 1919.
The Burial of the Sardine is synonymous with fire and fiesta. This year, to celebrate its 175th anniversary, they've decided to recreate the parade exactly as it was in 1919, based on accounts from that era. This photo captures the essence of what awaits us: floats pulled by animals and that red devil surrounded by smoke that looks like it's about to leap out of the frame.
The parade will take place on March 7, 2026, starting in the San Antolín neighborhood, crossing the San Pedro neighborhood and the Gran Vía, passing by the Cathedral—as seen in this shot—and ending with the burning of the sardine in Santo Domingo. Seeing the animals pulling history in the 21st century, with the Cathedral's facade as a backdrop, is one of those moments that reminds you why Murcia goes crazy for its sardine.
