Privacy for Sunbathing and Sea Bath. The Origins of the First Beach Holidays.

From one shore of Mar Menor to the other.

The old 'balnearios' (baths / health resort /spa) of Mar Menor were/are wooden walkways extending over the water, ending in platforms with cabins for changing clothes and bathing in privacy. The first one was built in 1904. Most of these structures disappeared in the 1970s due to tourism development, storms, or demolition.

Currently, private initiatives, local governments, and other institutions are restoring some of these structures.

A litlle bit of history: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, baths were recommended by medical prescription to treat rheumatism or skin problems.

The history of Spanish beach holidays began in the mid-19th century on the northern coast, specifically at El Sardinero in Santander and La Concha beach in San Sebastián. The custom of going to the beach for pleasure in Spain began in 1845, when doctors recommended that Queen Isabella II take sea baths to treat a skin condition. This medical practice was initially called "wave baths" or "sea baths."

Modesty and privacy ruled the 19th-century shore. People entered the water fully clothed or in heavy wool garments designed for bathing.
