The Dinar of Ibn Mardanish: The Brilliance of Murcian Andalusi
A gold dinar minted under the rule of the renowned Ibn Mardanish, popularly known as the "Wolf King" (1147–1172), on display in one of the illuminated cases at the San Cayetano Visitor Center in Monteagudo.
During his 12th-century reign, these coins were so highly regarded for their metal purity that they circulated widely throughout the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. Consequently, those kind of coins can be found in institutions such as the National Archaeological Museum (Madrid), the British Museum (London), the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris), and the American Numismatic Society (New York). As they were a form of international currency minted in large quantities during the 12th century, they appear with some regularity at numismatic auctions specializing in Islamic coinage.
