The Hidden Side of the Castle

As one moves along the path skirting the northern slope, the silhouette of Castle of Monteagudo reveals the dizzying geometry of its Andalusi walls. From this rear vantage point, the fortress’s perimeter is clearly visible, conforming to the rocky ridges like a crown of rammed earth.

Amidst the upper walls, a unique historical detail stands out: an opening cut directly into the masonry. This gap was deliberately created during the construction of the monumental sculpture to hoist building materials, rails, and scaffolding to the summit of the rocky outcrop. It is a gaping hole in the medieval wall that bears witness to the colossal logistical challenge involved in erecting the statue of Christ of Monteagudo in 1951.
