Begastri

The archaeological site of Begastri is located approximately 3 kilometers from the center of Cehegín (Northwest of Region of Murcia); it was settled by Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths, with evidence of Iberian culture dating back to the 4th century BC.

Its walls, built and reinforced during the Late Roman and Visigothic periods, featured sturdy towers designed to protect a population that witnessed the passage of Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims.

In the 1st century AD (CE), the area attained the status of a Roman *Municipium*. Pressure from barbarian peoples—which led to the collapse of Imperial Rome and the destruction of Carthago—coincided with Begastri’s greatest era of splendor in the 3rd century AD (CE), when it even became an Episcopal See.

The site is open on weekends from October to June, with entry times at 10:15, 11:15, and 12:15 (costing €2 per person), and from July to September at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30. Guided group tours can be arranged by calling 628 40 85 65 or the tourist office at 968 723 550. (Source, TurismoRegiondeMurcia.es)
