The Waterwheel of Hoya de Don García

Originally built in 1818, the waterwheel we see in the image is a 1946 reconstruction. This waterwheel is the second largest in Abarán, with a diameter of 8.20 meters. Its mechanism is capable of lifting water to a height of over 7 meters to irrigate approximately 137 tahúllas of land (15.31 hectares or 153,000 square meters), with a flow rate of 42 liters per second (about 1,440 liters per revolution). It takes its water from the main irrigation ditch of Abarán and Blanca, which is directly connected to the Segura River.

Although the original waterwheel was made entirely of wood, the current one combines iron and wood for greater durability.
