The Great Waterwheel of Abarán: Wooden Giant, living History of Water
The Great Waterwheel of Abarán (Gran Noria) is not just a tourist attraction; it is a monumental mechanical marvel that refuses to be forgotten and, to this day, proudly holds the title of the largest working waterwheel in all Europe.
Although the use of water in the area dates back to Medieval period, the current Great Waterwheel project originally dates from 1805. It was built to supply the Main - Blanca Irrigation Canal and bring life to the highlands that the river could not reach naturally. It was rebuilt in 1915 and again in 1951.
A masterpiece declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), it combines wood, a wrought iron axle, and the clean power of water.
