Black Hill Volcano

(Click on image to enlarge) Cerro Negro or Cabezo Negro is one of the sites selected to represent a Spanish geological context of global significance known as the "Neogene and Quaternary volcanism of the Iberian Peninsula."

It feels like entering a volcanic crater, but it is actually an abandoned quarry where rock formed by the volcano was extracted for use in road construction. Before being destroyed by quarrying operations, it was a conical hill standing about 400 meters tall (see image below).

The volcano dates back approximately 7 million years and was originally a submarine volcano.

Located at Calasparra (Region of Murcia Northwest), before entering the road to Sanctuary of Hope (Santuario de la Esperanza). Free access.
