Memories of the Mining Mountain Range: The Roberto Washing Plant
That is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring industrial facilities in the Mining Area of La Unión.
Inaugurated in the mid-20th century by the French company Peñarroya, this mining giant processed tons of ore using differential flotation to extract lead and zinc. Tailings flowed from its hoppers and conduits toward Portmán Bay, forever altering the coastline's shape and color. Today, its silent chimney and semi-ruined structures stand as a monument to industrial archaeology, a testament to an era that left an intense and irreversible human mark on the landscape.
