Acequias: Irrigation Ditches
This hydraulic engineering system has its roots in the Roman era, although it was brilliantly perfected and expanded during the Andalusi period (10th to 12th centuries).
According to the R.A.E., an *acequia* is a ditch or canal used to convey water, primarily for crop irrigation, but also for supplying water to settlements or for other purposes.
Although the item in the image is called a "brazal", that is a small "acequia", that takes the water from an "acequia", while an "acequia" usually takes water from river.
