The House of the Columns

 Located on Calle Mayor in Cehegín, the Casa de las Columnas (House of Columns) is a magnificent example of 18th-century Baroque civil architecture. As noted on its information plaque, the building is distinguished by its unique main entrance, framed by two imposing columns of jasper, quarried at nearby Peña Rubia, that support the grand balcony. Crowning the facade, a large stone-carved coat of arms bears witness to the noble lineage of the family that once inhabited this mansion, making it one of the most historic landmarks in Cehegín’s old town.

The building is notable for its main entrance, framed by two engaged columns, and a large central window on the upper floor. On the side elevation, there is a noble coat of arms belonging to the Sánchez de Amoraga family, topped by a protective hood molding. A polychrome depiction of the same heraldic emblem appears inside the building. Also noteworthy are the carved wooden balconies and the arrangement of eaves along the side façade. The building formerly housed the Post and Telegraph offices, which explains why its original appearance was preserved during subsequent administrative use.
