The Invisible Castle of Cehegín and its Keep.

As you stroll through the Plaza del Castillo (Castle Square), the question arises: where is the castle? Although the square’s name gives it away, today you won’t see battlements or massive walls at first glance. However, if you look closely at one of the corners, you will discover a fascinating remnant.

Wedged between the majestic Palacio de los Fajardo (Fajardo's Palace), famous for its striking geometric sgraffito work, and a blue municipal office building, a rugged limestone outcrop emerges. That crag is the actual foundation upon which the town’s medieval fortress once stood. To help us travel back in time, a large mural on the wall faithfully recreates the appearance of the imposing Keep before urban expansion and the repurposing of its stones caused it to vanish.

Although it originally had five towers, none of them remain, as they were demolished in 1956. The castle was the place from which the Order of Santiago administered the area. At first, for purely military interests. Later, the castle became a centre for revenue collection. The fortress was practically autonomous. The books mention cellars, oven, cistern, mill, chapel, stables and kitchen.

Here, you can see pictures before being demolished.
