The building traditionally comprised two main sections. The first, located on the ground floor, housed common prisoners and transients. The second, situated on the upper level, served as a high-security cell or a place for stricter confinement.

Day-to-day management fell to the warden. This official not only guarded the prisoners but was also responsible for providing their food, costs usually covered by the inmates' families or by local religious charitable brotherhoods.

One of the most striking accounts in the document concerns an event that took place on June 24th, 1755 (St. John's Day). As a result, the warden in charge was immediately stripped of his position due to negligence in his duties.

...on June 25, 1755, following an inspection of the jail. The inventory of the remaining restraint devices is chilling:

Another five-link chain.

Another chain currently in the dungeon.

Seven pairs of shackles.

An anvil, a punch, and a hammer.

Eleven keys to the doors of said prisons and their buildings, along with two padlocks.

No prisoners.
